HOW TO: Upgrade Joomla

IMPORTANT! It’s recommended to create a backup of your website before you start upgrade your Joomla to prevent any data loss.

Upgrade within the Same Major Version (e.g Joomla 3.3.1 to 3.3.6)

  1.  Log into Joomla! admin
Access to the admin panel of your website.

  2. Get the latest version
For Joomla 3.x, it will automatically look for updates at its official repository. If the new version is available, you will be notified in your admin panel. Just click on “Update now” button and go to the next step.

  3. Proceed with the upgrade
Now you will be redirecting to the Joomla update page. Here, you will find the information about your current Joomla version and the latest version that you will be upgrading to, the updated URL and the installation method. You shouldn’t make any changes, the upgrading process will go by default and that’s it!

Update from one Major Version to another (e.g Joomla 2.5 to 3.1)

  1.  Log into Joomla! admin
Access to the admin panel of your website.

  2. Access to Joomla update
Go to “Jumla! update” under the menu Components.

  3. Convert to Short Term Support
Currently there is still no long-term release of Joomla 3.x branch, so you need to switch to short-term release settings for the Update Server. Select “Short term support” from the drop-down list on “Update server” and click “Save and close”.

  4. Update Joomla
  5. After saving, the latest version will automatically detected. Click on the “Install” button to proceed the migration. It will take a few seconds to migrate the content and you will see the new Joomla 3.x on admin panel after the migration process.
