Things that you must know about Data Center

What is a Data Center?

A facility that stores an organization’s equipment and shared IT operations in order to process, store and disseminate applications and data is called a data center. It constrains an organization most important, crucial and proprietary assets that are vital to the daily operations. Thus, security and reliability are the top priorities of an IT organization.

Most modern data center infrastructures have changed to virtualized infrastructure in order to support workloads and applications via multi-cloud environments.

The Function

The data center is part of the enterprise that used to support provide support business daily operation, application and services like:

  • Manage, store, recover and backup data and information;
  • Daily use and productivity applications like email;
  • Process and manage e-commerce transactions;
  • Support online gaming communities;
  • Use for artificial intelligence (AI), big data and machine learning.

There are more than 7 million data centers all around the world today. Almost every organization, enterprise, company, business and even government has their own data center. We can also use public cloud-based services from hosts like Google, Sony, Amazon and Microsoft, rent servers at a colocation facility or use third-party data center services.

Main Parts

An effective data center will have a balanced investment in the facility to make sure the facility operates well, is able to handle the organization’s application and critical business data as well as secure against cyberattacks and intruders.

Core Elements

Facility

The space for IT equipment operates all the time and is designed to optimize and maintain the environment and space to make sure equipment is kept at a safe temperature and humidity range.

Main components

Software and equipment for the application, data storage and IT operation. For instance, firewalls, switches and routers, servers, storage systems and network infrastructure.

Supportive infrastructure

This equipment makes sure the data center has the highest possible availability and uptime.

For example:

  • Uninterruptible Power Sources (UPS)  with generators, battery banks and redundant power sources.
  • Environmental control such as air ventilation and air conditioning systems, exhaust systems and computer room air conditioners (CRAC)
  • Physical security systems like key card security systems, video surveillance and biometrics systems.
  • Operations staff that will always maintain and monitor the operation of the data center.

Summary

Data center changed quite a lot these years. It has changed from physical to virtual infrastructure to support workloads across other physical equipment and multi-cloud environments. It has become a very important part of IT enterprise, business, organization and even government. It will continue to grow, evolve and become much better.
